LAGOS
The Lessons of Lagos, Be Different, But Universal
Some would argue jewelry is not a necessity. Steven Lagos and his wife, Ann King Lagos, would disagree. "They (people) do need jewelry, why else would it have been around since the beginning of time? There’s something inside people, this need to adorn themselves, whether it’s for status, class, recognition or to mark occasions. We have so many traditions built around jewelry. It’s part of almost all families. You move out of houses eventually, but you pass on jewelry." That’s why Lagos uses the phrase "heirloom of tomorrow" in selling their jewelry. The two were newcomers on the jewelry making scene in Philadelphia back in the mid 1980’s. When they made the cover of Jeweler’s Circular Keystone Magazine everything began clicking with their business and obviously with their new friendship, because they eventually married. Despite their high recognition in the world of fine jewelry, the Lagos don’t pretend to specialize in one-of-a-kind pieces and a desire to get out front in new design. They do confess to having strong marketing instincts for what customers want and when it comes to fashion, they say they "wallow" in it. The Lagos are extremely particular about the retailers they allow to carry their designs. They feel proper attention to the customer and the way the store’s handling and displaying and promoting of their pieces ensures their superiority to other lines in these regards.
